Middle- and high-income dog-owning families in China “have a stronger demand for traveling with pets”, said a 2023 report.

China has one of the world’s fastest-growing pet economies, with some younger Chinese keeping pets instead of having children.

Chinese media has reported that the railway authority’s proposal stems from its hopes of leveraging China’s burgeoning pet economy to shore up coffers that had been depleted due to the country’s strict Covid-19 restrictions. A report by Euromonitor International with Asia Pet Research Institute in 2023 found that middle- and high-income dog-owning families in China “have a stronger demand for travelling with pets”.The hashtag “pets may soon be allowed on railway” has become one of the hottest searches on micro-blogging platform Weibo, with at least 53.6 million views and sparking 11,000 discussion threads since May 11.

A survey by a media outlet with 2.5 million followers on Weibo found that 54,500 respondents would try taking their pets out when they go on trains, if this was allowed. Dance teacher Wu Mengjun, 33, who lives in Beijing, said she travels by car whenever she wants to go out of the capital city so that she can take along her two dogs.
