An 88-year-old professor at the University of Georgia resigned during the middle of class last week because one of his students refused to properly wear a mask.
A University of Georgia professor resigned during the middle of class last week because one of his students refused to properly wear a mask, reportedIrwin Bernstein was teaching an upper division psychology seminar class on Aug. 24 when a student arrived unmasked, the paper said. After he asked her to put on a mask, another student gave her one, but she didn’t wear it over her nose.
The words “No mask, no class” were written on the blackboard in the classroom, however the university system doesn’t require students to wear masks but does encourage the use of masks. Bernstein asked the student to pull up the mask and she replied that she “had a really hard time breathing” with the mask over her nose,Bernstein announced his resignation on the spot and left the classroom.
The paper said the incident happened on the second day of class. On the first day, Bernstein told students he had a “No mask, no class” policy. “I am sorry that the pandemic has caused so much dissension. I personally do not agree that stimulating the economy is more important than people’s lives and am disappointed that some people feel that it is,” Bernstein said.
