.GaryGensler is nothing short of a divisive figure in crypto circles. Years ago he taught at class at MIT on crypto. Is he contradicting his own teachings now as SECGov chair? An opinion:
Illicit activity has been a concern from day one
My interpretation is that Gensler believed that broad agreement existed around the need to curtail illicit activity, but that implementation of policies to do so was inconsistent. This is something that maybe I should’ve seen coming. While not discussed at length, approximately six minutes in, the topic of crypto intermediaries was broached and how they serve as viable regulatory targets. A question of why laws historically have been attached to intermediaries was raised as well.
It was stated, in no uncertain terms, that in the crafting of public policy, “messaging” and “coalition building” are front and center. “Analysis” by comparison was almost an afterthought.
