A group of centrist Democrats has been quietly working with Republicans to develop a debt deal of their own should President Biden and Kevin McCarthy fail to broker one.

Don BaconThose involved in the bipartisan talks say they are working to try to end the dangerous showdown before the United States’ comes to the brink of default, which they suggest is the fault of Biden and Republican leaders equally. “You’ve got party leaders in both houses that don’t want us to talk to one another,” one of the centrist Democratic negotiators told.

Washington had been bracing for a fiscal fight since Republicans won a narrow House majority in November — and since their most extreme members extracted a number of significant concessions from McCarthy in his hunt for the speaker’s gavel.
