A remarkable photo shows the unlikely moment when a harbour seal wound up in the mouth of a hungry humpback whale off Vancouver Island.
Naturalist Tomis Filipovic with Eagle Wing Tours was on a tour on Thursday when he snapped the pic of the surprised seal in the mouth of a humpback named Zillion.
“And I thought, well, usually the birds move, I figure the seal will get the message. You see this big 50-foot whale coming at you, you’ll move out of the way,” said Filipovic.That didn’t seem to be the case for this feasting seal, however, and when Zillian came to take a bite out of the second bait ball the seal got sucked in with the fish.
From the whale watching boat, Filipovic said they could see Zillion breach through the water and open her mouth repeatedly. That being said, the naturalist says he’s never seen it happen himself in the six years he’s been a whale watching guide, and certainly never thought a seal would wind up in a humpback’s mouth.
