Online privacy campaigners have filed complaints in several European countries against six Chinese companies, including TikTok, alleging that they unlawfully send Europeans' personal data to China. NOYB, an Austria-based privacy group, lodged six complaints against TikTok, AliExpress, SHEIN, Temu, WeChat, and Xiaomi, marking their first legal action against Chinese companies. NOYB has previously launched successful cases against US tech giants like Meta and Google under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The group asserts that China's authoritarian surveillance state doesn't offer the same data protection as the EU, making data transfers unlawful. NOYB is seeking administrative fines of up to 4% of the companies' global sales.
