The United States once had a 10-year assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. Since then, Biden said, the number of mass shootings soared. During his speech, Biden used the mass shooting in Uvalde, where a teenager was able to purchase assault weapons shortly after his 18th birthday, as an example of how such legislation could have far-reaching impact.are now the the No. 1 killer of children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“They had one message for all of us: Do something. Just do something. For God’s sake, do something,” he said of the message he heard in Uvalde and in Buffalo, New York, the site of a mass shooting inside a grocery store 10 days earlier on May 14.
