Premier League’s top four hopefuls primed for tense race theSun theSundaily Arsenal Chelsea ManUtd Spurs
Manchester United’s Dutch head coach Erik ten Hag reacts during the football friendly match between Atletico Madrid and Manchester United at the Ullevaal stadium in Olso, Norway, on July 30, 2022. AFPPIX: Desperate to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United have spent the close season aggressively pursuing new recruits with varying degrees of success.
With former owner Roman Abramovich's lieutenants all swept away as part of the house-cleaning at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel took on more responsibility as the German worked with new co-owner Todd Boehly on overhauling his squad. Instead, Chelsea's focus has been on replacing lost centre-backs Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, who joined Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively on free transfers.
The studious Ten Hag is said to have impressed his squad with his attention to detail and intense training sessions since arriving from Ajax in May. Losing a player with Ronaldo's lethal instincts in front of goal is not the way Ten Hag would prefer to begin his time in Manchester, but he may eventually feel the departure of such a demanding superstar would be addition by subtraction.
In north London, Tottenham and Arsenal have been engaged in a frenzied arms race after their battle for local supremacy reached a dramatic conclusion last season.
