chief executive Richard Masters has hit out at plans for an independent regulator of English football, saying it could damage the league's competitive advantage over the rest of Europe.
A regulator will have a raft of powers to ensure clubs are sustainably run and the ability to block teams from joining breakaway competitions such as the European Super League.However, top-flight teams have been at loggerheads with the English Football League , which controls the three divisions below the Premier League, over a new funding agreement for the pyramid.
Masters, however, insisted regulation risks harming the Premier League's status as the world's most-watched league. “It is a risk to regulate an industry that has worked so hard to lead the world, especially when none of its competitors are subject to the same regulation.”
