The Victorian Premier said he hopes 'common sense prevails' amid reports a 'hero' female police officer in the state did not get a promotion after she wore earrings during media interviews.

The Herald Sun reported on Tuesday Leading Senior Constable Sally Fairweather missed out on being promoted after being pulled up about her appearance.

But she was addressed by a superior after it was found the earrings she wore in media appearances following the rescue spruiking water safety did not meet Victoria Police's uniform policy. Mr Andrews told reporters he hoped"common sense" would prevail as he described Sen Constable Fairweather as"an absolute hero". "I would hope common sense prevails here and the only consideration there should be the outstanding quality of her service, her courage, and her commitment to keeping Victorians safe."

Sen Constable Fairweather had also appeared in a photo on Victoria Police's Facebook page in December where she was praised for her heroics, in addition to her media appearances.
