Memphis has a summer tour to the Dominican Republic beginning Aug. 1 and fall classes starting Aug. 28, both before the new date of Williams' preliminary hearing
Mikey Williams’ preliminary hearing on gun charges has been postponed a second time, casting doubt on whether the star guard from San Ysidro High School will enroll at Memphis in time for a summer foreign tour or for the fall semester.
A four-star prospect, Williams committed to Memphis last fall after a record-breaking prep career and signed a letter of intent. He currently appears on the Tigers roster on the athletic department’s website but is not believed to have officially enrolled or arrived on campus. Most of the team has, with practices beginning later this month for a summer tour to the Dominican Republic that begins Aug. 1.
Williams has not been convicted of a crime and technically could enroll in the university, but Memphis coach Penny Hardaway appears to awaiting further clarity in the case before having him join the team. Hardaway was unavailable to local media about the latest development. “We have to let everything play itself out first and not overreact, because I’m not calling him guilty before he’s innocent. A lot of people do that. But, for me, we’re just staying the course until we figure this whole, entire thing out.”
