The City of Johannesburg's Metropolitan Trading Company is at the heart of the dispute, resulting in political fighting that underscored the fragile coalition of the ANC, the EFF, and the PA in the metro.
JOHANNESBURG – A broadband contract, potentially worth R2.2 billion per annum, is at the centre of political divisions in the City of Johannesburg.
The behind-the-scenes tussling also involved two MMCs almost exchanging blows over the broadband contract, as well as a board being appointed and fired within three months. Some in the city raised concerns over processes around the sale of Johannesburg’s broadband infrastructure, including links between the service provider and the PA.But unlike the city’s other entities, like Johannesburg Roads Agency and City Power, the MTC flew below the radar, while its true potential remained untapped.
The ANC's regional chairman and finance MMC Dada Morero tried - to no avail - to keep the MTC within ANC control and away from the PA. But he lost the fight when a decision was taken in council at night, after he had left the meeting, to move it to Kunene's transport portfolio.
