Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Dallas, center, looks at her official portrait, with family, at the unveiling ceremony on November 17, 2022, in the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology hearing room, which she chairs. She is retiring from Congress after 30 years.WASHINGTON — From astronauts to grandkids, VIPs packed the House science committee room to pay tribute to retiring Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson as her official portrait was unveiled Thursday.
Rep. Frank Lucas of Oklahoma, the top Republican on the committee, ticked off a long list of near “miraculous” achievements Johnson has overseen despite the bitter partisanship of the past few years -- none of which, he said, would have been feasible “without EBJ’s style, skill, subtlety, understanding, patience, and persistence.”
“We have to do more, but every time we get tired, we’re going to come in this room and look at this portrait and we’re going to say, there was our champion,” she said.
