The limited-edition timepiece has a vintage feel and revives a style worn by the U.S. Air Force
Porsche Design’s new Chronograph 1 Utility Limited Edition pays tribute to the Austrian brand’s military chronograph from the late 1970s, borrowing heavily on its design, while enhancing it with state-of-the-art updates.
Limited to 250 pieces, the upsized 42.7mm iteration, priced at US$13,000, advances its military predecessor into the 21st century with titanium carbide , an innovative ceramic material developed and patented by Porsche Design. The scratch-resistant, extremely lightweight and hypoallergenic material has, until now, only been used for Porsche Design chronographs with ties to specific Porsche sports cars.
In another nod to its ancestor, the limited-edition’s matte black dial provides optimal legibility, and the three chronograph totalizers use the vintage font. A circular red TiC logo positioned between 1 o’clock and 2 o’clock replaces the vintage military dial’s red circular 3H symbol, signifying the use of luminous tritium, a radioactive hydrogen isotope that enhance night vision. Additionally, two distinctive luminous dots at 12 o’clock act as a clear orientation point on the dial in the dark.
The restaurant with an adjacent car exhibition pavilion was established by Ferdi Porsche, nephew of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche , who designed the iconic Porsche 911 in 1963 and founded Studio F.A. Porsche in 1972. F.A.T. International is Ferdi’s brand, which organizes the annual GP Ice Race in Zell am See, and Mankei refers to the original name of the place, Mankeiwirt.
