Pope offers prayers, calls for peace in Haiti

Pope Francis on Sunday offered his prayers for Haiti, where criminal gangs have unleashed havoc in recent days.

“I am following with concern and pain the serious crisis affecting Haiti and the violent episodes that have occurred in recent days,” the 87-year-old said after his Sunday Angelus prayer.He offered prayers for an end to the violence, calling for all sides to work towards peace and reconciliation, “with the renewed support of the international community”.

French rescue workers were on Sunday searching for seven people, including two children, missing after violent storms swept the south of the country with most believed to have been swept away in cars on flooded bridges. Students were just about to settle into their classes after singing Nigeria's national anthem when the gunshots rang out. Then chaos erupted.

US President Joe Biden and presumptive White House challenger Donald Trump traded barbs Saturday on the key topics of age and immigration, as they targeted the battleground state of Georgia.
