The visit to the Asia-Pacific by Pope Francis signifies the 87-year-old pontiff’s deep interest in the region, especially Asia, which is home to two-thirds of the world's population that is heavily diverse in terms of ethnicity, faith and culture.East Timor all set for first papal visit since independence Pope Francis speaks with Muhammad Nurullah, a Rohingya refugee from Myanmar’s Rakhine State, during a meeting in Dhaka on Dec. 1, 2017.

However, for some, a great opportunity for him to highlight the plight of the Rohingya people appears to have been missed.Myanmar has been in trouble because of military rule, ethnic conflicts, and the struggles of a whole range of ethnic armed groups fighting for autonomy for decades. They have been fleeing to Bangladesh and other Southeast Asian countries for decades as a result of persecution and ethnic violence in Rakhine state. Bangladesh, however, has also been deeply affected by the Rohingya crisis as the Rohingya have been fleeing and taking shelter in Bangladesh's border district of Cox’s Bazar since the 1970s.

All this happened while the International Court of Justice, where The Gambia filed a genocide case against the Myanmar military, ordered provisional measures to prevent any genocidal acts. ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand also shelter a sizable number of Rohingya and face challenges from the trafficking of Rohingya via the sea. Like Bangladesh, these countries could benefit from a resolution to the Myanmar crisis.
