In his message for the International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking, Pope Francis urges Catholics and people of goodwill to combat modern slavery and support victims.
Pope Francis issued a message ahead of the 11th International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking, calling on Catholics and people of goodwill to combat the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. The Day falls on February 8, the liturgical memorial of St. Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese woman who was trafficked as a child and later became a nun.
Recognizing the Jubilee Year's focus on hope, the Pope urged reflection on how to nourish that hope for those trapped in modern slavery. He posed crucial questions: 'Where do we get new impetus to combat the trade in human organs and tissues, the sexual exploitation of children and girls, forced labour, including prostitution, drug and arms trafficking?'Pope Francis asserted that Christ provides the sole true source of hope and strength for trafficking victims and those fighting against this scourge. He commended the efforts of numerous young people globally who demonstrate that anyone can stand with victims and survivors. He emphasized, 'With the help of God, we can avoid becoming accustomed to injustice and ward off the temptation to think that certain phenomena cannot be eradicated.' He stressed the responsibility of each individual to oppose the economic and criminal mechanisms that profit from others' suffering.Drawing on Jesus' teachings, the Pope highlighted the importance of listening and compassion in aiding trafficking survivors' recovery, noting that many of the most ardent opponents of trafficking are former victims themselves. He acknowledged that trafficking is a complex, ever-evolving issue fueled by wars, conflicts, famine, and climate change consequences. Therefore, he underscored the need for united, global efforts, particularly under the coordination of international organizations to effectively combat it. Concluding his message, Pope Francis invited all engaged in this fight to entrust their work to the intercession of St. Josephine Bakhita. 'Together,' he affirmed, 'we can make a great effort and create the conditions for trafficking and exploitation to be banned and for respect for fundamental human rights to prevail, in fraternal recognition of our common humanity.
