An estimated 50,000 children – aged 6 to 12 – from over 100 countries listened intently to 87-yearold Pope Francis, who encouraged them not to let their dreams of peace be stolen. Pope Francis to take eight week break in liturgical schedule this summer
The children and their families enthusiastically welcomed Pope Francis upon his arrival at Rome’s Olympic Stadium on May 25. While the majority of the participants hailed from Italy, many participants came from Spain, Eritrea, Syria, and Afghanistan, as well as war-torn areas such as Ukraine, South Sudan, and Haiti. Some 60 children came from the Holy Land, Jerusalem, Gaza, and Bethlehem.
Throughout the day, several children’s messages were read aloud, including one from Victor, a nineyear- old Palestinian boy, who said, “We only want to play, study, and live free like so many other children in the world.” A young Indonesian girl, whose country is expecting a visit from the Pope in September, asked what miracle he would choose to perform: “That all children have what they need to live, to eat, to play, to go to school. This is the miracle that I would like to do,” he said.
