Earlier that day, the Pope received a group of Ukrainian and Palestinian children: “The Holy Father greeted us with a big smile and great joy, like a real grandfather hugging his grandchildren,” said Fr Marcin Schmidt, a Polish missionary working on the Poland-Ukraine border, who accompanied the delegation. “Ukrainian children don’t smile,” Pope Francis said, according to Vatican News.
“We are joy, we are the future, we are life, we are a sign of love,” the children chanted as they sang the hymn for World Children’s Day. During the meeting, the Pope asked the children to repeat their desire for peace: “I know wars make you sad, but I want to ask: are all of you truly saddened about the wars?” “Yes,” they replied.
