“Just because the Arctic is a place of wilderness, it need not become a place of lawlessness,” Pompeo tells Arctic Council
ROVANIEMI, Finland—The U.S. warned against encroachment in the Arctic by China and Russia, calling on nations with Arctic territory to guard against aggressive claims and actions in an area that has attracted global competition.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that all countries that have Arctic territory and make up the eight-nation Arctic Council—Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the U.S.—should benefit from the area’s resources, as well as other countries.
