The Victorian Liberal Party's chances at an upcoming by-election have been given a boost after a reported move by Labor a month out from polling day.
Reports have emerged Labor has opted against running a candidate in the north-east Melbourne seat which is held by the Liberals on a margin of 4.3 per cent.
The party has also experienced a plunge in support after Premier Daniel Andrews announced the 2026 Commonwealth Games will no longer be held in regional Victoria. Labor's decision will also come as a relief to Opposition Leader John Pesutto, whose leadership will be put to the test at the by-election.
Ms Werner's main challenger will be the Victorian Greens candidate Tomas Lightbody, who is the Deputy Mayor of Manningham. Mr Lightbody will campaign heavily on housing affordability and climate change in a seat the Greens polled 11.7 per cent of the first preference vote at the 2022 election.
