In this week's Eyewitness News podcast, 'Politricking with Tshidi Madia', we speak to Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink on navigating the capital city through choppy waters, cholera, and maladministration.

Tshwane’s mayor Cilliers Brink says the city’s administration, finance and political stability remain challenging, as he marks over 100 days in office this month.

“It's not a walk in the park to be the mayor of this city. And in fact, many people said to me, if you want career death, go to Tshwane,” remarks Brink as he reflects on his past few weeks in office. He says the “paper thin,” majority has helped to bring some stability to the council. He also lauded the current city manager Johan Mettler. The DA found itself in a protracted battle with former municipal manager Moeketsi Mosola, an appointment believed to have been made at the behest of the EFF, which had an informal working arrangement with the DA during that period.

The capital’s council was also shambolic at best during the previous administration, finding itself in wranglings with the provincial government and on the agenda at the Constitutional Court. This as most sittings collapsed, with parties battling over issues or walking out, resulting in it failing to meet quorum when dealing with matters impacting service delivery.

“And if we're honest about it, even if you can't detect cholera in the water, if people don't trust the water in their taps, it creates the conditions for waterborne diseases to flourish, because then you're not going to wash your hands, or you're going to be skeptical about the hygiene tips that are given,” says Brink.
