Vaccination experts said the updated booster was developed before data could be gathered from human trials so it could be made and distributed as soon as possible.

The updated vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are designed to specifically protect against the omicron variant. Vaccination experts said the updated booster was developed in that manner so it could be made and distributed as soon as possible. They also said only minor changes were made to the original vaccine’s formula to specifically target variant strains, and the testing it underwent is similar to testing of the annual flu vaccine.
