Constitutional expert and Law and Policy lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Fathi Yusof said political leaders needed to find a way to identify areas of cooperation to establish a government as soon as possible. At 5am today, the Election Commission announced that no political party had obtained more than 50% of the 219 contested parliamentary seats, or a simple majority to form a government, resulting in a hung parliament for the first time since the general election was held in 1959 following the country’s independence.

Asked whether the participation of any party in a post-general election coalition could be considered as contradicting the anti-party hopping law, he said that was not the case. “However, after the constitutional amendment regarding party hopping came into effect, the opportunity for individual MPs to switch allegiances has been shut,” he said.
