Polio has been detected in New York City’s sewage, suggesting the virus that causes the disease is likely circulating there, health authorities said Friday, calling on residents of the Big Apple to make sure they are vaccinated.

Polio, which notably affects children, can cause permanent paralysis of the arms and legs, and even death. Only 86 percent of children aged six months to five years in America’s most populous city have received three doses of vaccine, officials said — meaning 14 percent are not fully protected.Experts from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been dispatched to New York state to help lead testing and vaccination efforts.
