Animal control officials in Summit are attempting to trap the likely rabid fox.
Three dogs were attacked in separate incidents by a coyote and a likely rabid fox in Summit on Sunday and Monday, authorities said. The first attack involving a coyote took place Sunday in the area of Dale Drive. The coyote fled into the woods after biting the dog, Summit police said.
On Monday evening, two dogs were separately attacked near the corner of Mountain Avenue and Larned Road by a likely rabid fox. Neither dog was hurt, according to police. “Foxes, especially red foxes, commonly live in close association with human residences and communities,” state Division of Fish and Wildlife officials said. “They frequently inhabit yards, parks, and golf courses, especially areas that adjoin suitable, undeveloped habitat. Healthy foxes pose virtually no danger to humans. Foxes can grow accustomed to human activity but are seldom aggressive toward people.“Use caution with pets from dusk to dawn,” police said.
“Dogs smaller than 40 pounds are often regarded by coyotes as prey,” police said. “Do not leave outside unattended, especially after dark. Larger dogs may also be attacked if they are seen as a threat or competitor. If encounter a coyote, make loud noises by yelling and waving arms to scare them off. To keep coyotes away from your home, keep food and trash secure. Keep hedges trimmed as well.
