A Malaysian police corporal was charged with robbing a Bangladeshi man of a gold necklace worth over half a million ringgit. The officer pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.

A police officer pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of robbing a gold necklace worth over half a million from a Bangladeshi man last November. Corporal Muhammad Arieff Marhalim, 40, entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Izralizam Sanusi. According to the charge, the accused, together with another who is still at large, was accused of robbing a gold necklace weighing 1,499.81 grams worth RM580,345.

26, RM7,000 cash and a Redmi Note 13 mobile phone belonging to the victim, Robin Miah. The act was allegedly committed on Jalan Pudu, Dang Wangi here between 12.25 pm and 3.15 pm, November 26 last year. The accused was charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code which provides a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and can be fined or whipped, if found guilty. Deputy Public Prosecutor, Nor Aisyah Mohamed Zanyuin proposed bail of RM15,000 with a Malaysian citizen guarantor. However, lawyer, Shah Rizal Abdul Manan representing the accused applied for a reduction in bail amount on the grounds that his client is still serving in the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and has family obligations. “It is requested that the court impose a low sentence on the accused considering that he is still working and needs to support three children,” he said. The court then allowed bail of RM10,000 to be imposed on the accused with a local citizen guarantor and set January 22 next for the case to be mentioned again.-UTUSA
