The commitment of police officers to rid the province of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition resulted in the arrest of three suspects in isolated incidents on Tuesday, 24 October 2023.

Police members of Harare police were busy with patrols in Mandela Park at around 12:00 when they responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in Francis Street. As the members approached the vehicle, four unknown suspects fled the scene on foot, firing gunshots in the direction of the police members. The members gave chase and arrested two males whom they found in possession of two 9mm pistols.

In an unrelated intervention police members of Maitland Flying Squad attended to a complaint of shooting incident in progress in Athlone. Upon their arrival at the identified address, they gained entrance and restrained an unknown man on the premises and continued to search the premises. They confiscated three firearms and arrested a 29-year-old man on charges of discharge of firearm in a municipal area and the possession of an unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Khayelitsha and Athlone Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges, once charged. The views of authors published on South Africa Today are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of South Africa Today.
