Victoria Police have charged a man with murder and attempted murder following an incident at a property in Melbourne's north.

Shaun Sanderson was arrested by police on Gilbert Road at Preston at about 2.40pm after an hours-long manhunt for the 32-year-old.

Footage captured by 7 News showed Mr Sanderson being held to the ground by police at the busy intersection, hours after the massive search operation. Forensic police attended the scene at Reservoir in Melbourne's north following the terrifying incident. Picture: Olivia Condous. Heavily armed police officers swarmed the property shortly after 8.20am on Wednesday, following reports of an alleged"assault with an edged weapon".
