Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Sihle Zikalala says at least 605 suspects linked to the construction mafia have been arrested.
Speaking during a webinar on the construction mafia, sponsored by MDA Construction & Technology Attorneys and hosted by Creamer Media and Construction Alliance SA on Wednesday, Zikalala said: “It is important that we all speak with one voice in condemning the site destruction and extortion affecting this sector.
Zikalala said the government should deal with the situation in a legal way so that legality is preserved, and consensus should be achieved. There was a need to ensure that construction continued for the betterment of the South African economy as a whole and that disruptions were avoided. He said those found to be extorting money from contractors, including government officials, should face the wrath of the law.
I must hasten and say the court will issue an interdict against individuals. So, we do know the individuals, they are stated in the court interdicts but, really, what we are not seeing from the side of law enforcement agencies is increased activities in terms of making sure these very criminals are arrested and brought to book.
