On Thursday, the WCPA will be formally announcing its legislative priorities to bring before state lawmakers in 2024.
The top priority for the WCPA is the establishment of a statewide independent prosecutor, operating within the Washington Attorney General’s office. Washington already has an, but not a prosecutor to follow through if the OII finds cases in which police illegally used deadly force.
WCPA also wants to end traffic stops for non-moving violations, which members say will increase safety and equity while also allowing limited police resources to concentrate on high-risk behavior. The coalition also supports legislation that would strengthen and clarify the role the Attorney General’s office plays in bringing suit where there are system failures at a law enforcement agency that violates the Washington constitution or state laws. The focus would be on widespread misconduct as opposed to isolated or sporadic instances of wrongdoing.
The group will also oppose any efforts by the law enforcement lobby to roll back the limits placed on high-speed chases by police.
