Poland said it would supply Ukraine with German-made Leopard battle tanks if Germany doesn't grant approval for the transfer soon
A meeting to discuss a new package of military equipment for Ukraine of officials from 50 countries led by the U.S. is due to start Friday at the Ramstein U.S. base in Germany. As part of the package, the U.S. is expected to provide Stryker armored fighting vehicles for the first time.
Senior German officials said Wednesday that Berlin wouldn’t give consent for such transfers—required under the rules that Germany, like many countries, imposes on countries that purchase its military equipment. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Germany should provide Ukraine with tanks from its own fleet. For months, Poland has pushed for other allies to provide Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, which says it needs heavy combat vehicles to reclaim land taken last year. The threat of a potential Spring offensive by Russian mobilized troops has lent urgency to that push.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, however, is unwilling to ship German-made tanks, or provide the permission allies need to send their own Leopards, unless the U.S. agrees to send American-made Abrams battle tanks, senior German officials said on Wednesday.
