Why Pokémon's entire voice cast changed at once.

Long-time fans of the English dub of Pokémon, or even just those who've gone back to the beginning after watching more recent episodes, will surely notice that the voices of Ash and the rest of the cast aren't the same as they used to be. While that might seem like a natural change over 25 years, the fact is that the show at one point dumped its entire voice actors cast for very controversial reasons.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Pokémon anime was originally dubbed by 4Kids Entertainment, a now-defunct company that localized many anime series, repackaging them for younger children, much to the chagrin of certain fans. While many fans had their bones to pick with 4Kids, they quickly grew used to the existing voice cast.

The Murky Truth Behind Pokémon's Recasting As one might expect, most of the existing voice actors were quite upset at the news, and while some remained quiet, others spoke out to fans who contacted them, explaining that Pokémon USA was looking to cut costs by replacing the voice actors with "sound-a-likes" who wouldn't need to be paid so highly.

The recasting was met with a massively negative response from fans, which ultimately led to Ash being recast again with Sarah Natochenny, who would go on to play him for the remainder of the series' run. Despite fan campaigns, the new voice actors were ultimately kept, but it took a while for them to gain their footing, leading to many awkward episodes in the early days after the change.

The Pokémon anime's dismissal of the voice cast who brought the show all the popularity it had received from 1998 to 2006 was undeniably a misstep; not only did it betray those actors, but it upset the fans and gave the impression the series was little more than a cheap commercial for the franchise to Pokémon USA, despite their public insistence to the contrary.
