Authorities destroyed nearly a metric ton of shabu valued at ₱6.7 billion that was confiscated from an arrested police sergeant in October last year.
The Philippine National Police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency led the destruction of the 990 kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride, more popularly known as shabu, in Trece Martires, Cavite on March 16.in a lending office in Tondo, Manila owned by Police Master Sergeant Rodolfo Mayo. The operation led to his arrest.
PNP Chief Rodolfo Azurin dismissed Mayo from the police service on March 21 for three counts of grave misconduct and conduct unbecoming of a police officer."The destruction of these dangerous drugs is a significant milestone in the fight of PNP against illegal drugs," the PNP said in a statement. The PNP added that"it will not allow people who show no regard for the PNP organization and put their personal self-interest before their allegiance and commitment to service to tarnish its reputation."
Early in March, a Senate panel ordered the detention of two police officers who were cited in contempt after supposedly keeping 42 kilograms of shabu from the illegal drugs seized from Mayo. Meanwhile, an asset of the PNP and PDEA revealed to lawmakers that seized illegal drugs are reportedly being given to informants as rewards after a successful law enforcement operation
