The Prime Minister said improving Australia's defence capabilities didn't need to come at the cost of good relations in the region, as he rebuffed criticism from China.

, Australia is set to acquire up to five US Virginia class boats while simultaneously working with both the US and UK on a future AUKUS design, with an official announcement expected next week.

Asked about China’s objections by reporters in New Delhi, Mr Albanese was unapologetic about the decision. “We are investing in capability, as we should, but we're also investing in relationships, as we are. It is not a contradictory position,” the Prime Minister said.“I've been doing that here in India. We're doing that throughout the Indo-Pacific. We've done that as well, improved our relationship with China, in recent times as well.”

Speaking from the deck of the newly built Indian aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, Mr Albanese spoke of India’s involvement in major naval exercises involving Australia and other allies later this year.
