One resident suggested that not all short-term rentals cause problems.
AdvertisementPlano City Council, at the recommendation of consultant Gap Strategies, appointed the task force in the spring as part of the city’s data collection and community outreach efforts. The process, which will approximately conclude in spring of 2024, should culminate in a more permanent solution. Members of the task force include Plano Texas Neighborhood Coalition participants, short-term rental hosts and other Plano residents.
As part of the data collection, Plano conducted from April 17 to May 17 a citizen survey on short-term rentals, in which 64% of the 6,109 unique respondents said they would be very uncomfortable having an STR on their block and 10% more said they would be moderately uncomfortable. Seventy-two percent of respondents said they believe living next to a short-term rental decreases their property values.
During the task force’s second meeting on July 18, the group discussed safety and security, private property rights, preserving neighborhood character and the potential for a lawsuit against the city from advocates on each side of the issue.
“I think they really do their best to look at it, weigh it on both sides,” said Joshua Frick, a Collin County resident and president of Foxhole Strategies, a political consultant. “I actually don’t envy them. It’s really difficult because no matter who you are, very few people are like ‘Yeah, I’d love for my neighbor to be a short-term rental.’ … And yet, I’ve talked to those people that have said ‘I’m super nervous because this is my whole savings plan.
“If we use the logic to say that we should have no short-term rentals because a few are causing problems,” Holland said, “that is no different than saying because a number of people throughout the city have tall weeds and grass, … that we should get rid of all the grass.”.
