The three\u002Dyear pilot is expected to run to the end of March 2025.
The provincial justice, corrections and health ministries jointly issued a request for proposals for the Back-to-Basics pilot, which would provide participants with 18 months of support.
According to the RFP document, the program is meant for women transitioning out of Pine Grove Correctional Centre who have a pattern of reoffending and returning to custody. The connections to supports offered through the program are to continue even if the participant is re-incarcerated while still participating in the program.
As for what is defined as “lower-level” crimes: the document specifies that these are low in severity, including violating court orders, failure to comply and to appear at court, or possession of stolen property or theft. The target women’s time in custody averages six days on remand and 36 days when sentenced.
The Back-to-Basics program is meant to provide case management, help participants access mental health and addictions supports, provide transportation upon release if needed, and help with navigating the system.
