Canada lost 63 people in the ill-fated Ukraine International Airlines flight, nearly half from Edmonton; 'People feel like they’ve lost a limb.'
After Iran fired missiles at U.S. troops in Iraq on Tuesday, members of Edmonton’s Iranian-Canadian community were glued to the television. Then some unexpected news broke: A plane had crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran.
The members quickly began sharing notes on the messaging app Telegram to figure out if anyone they knew had been on the flight. They also reviewed names on manifests released by officials in Iran and Ukraine, and came up with a startling number: 27.A Ukraine-bound plane with more than 170 passengers and crew crashed after taking off from Tehran’s main airport.
