A passenger plane and a military helicopter crashed into the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., resulting in an estimated 67 deaths. The collision occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Search and rescue operations are underway.

A tragic incident unfolded near Washington, D.C. , as a passenger aircraft belonging to American Airlines and a Black Hawk helicopter of the United States Army collided over the Potomac River, resulting in an estimated 67 fatalities. The collision occurred on the evening of July 1st, 2023, close to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The Washington Post reported that several bodies were recovered from the crash site.

A source from American Airlines informed Reuters that the plane was scheduled to carry 60 passengers and two pilots, along with two flight attendants. The military helicopter was reported to be carrying three personnel. As of NBC's reporting, four individuals were rescued from the Potomac River. A webcam recording from the Kennedy Center captured an explosion in the sky around 8:47 PM local time, followed by the burning plane rapidly plunging into the river. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a statement confirming that the passenger jet collided with the military helicopter as it approached the runway at Reagan Airport. American Airlines Flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines on behalf of American Airlines, departed from Wichita, Kansas. In response to the disaster, local authorities launched a search and rescue operation on the Potomac River involving numerous agencies. Dozens of emergency personnel, including police officers, paramedics, and rescue teams, rushed to the scene, using boats to assist in the recovery efforts. Reagan Airport confirmed that all incoming and outgoing flights were temporarily suspended to facilitate the emergency operation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stated that it was gathering more information about the incident. American Airlines announced that it was investigating the crash involving American Eagle Flight 5342 and would release further updates as they became available. The incident has raised concerns about airspace safety in the United States, particularly after several near-collision incidents in recent years. This tragedy marks the worst commercial air disaster in the U.S. since 2009, when a Colgan Air flight crashed in New York, claiming the lives of 49 passengers and one person on the ground
