Some students are assigned a school based on an algorithm, which factors in parental income and education level, neighborhood proximity and sibling preference.

Under previous efforts to better integrate schools in the district, some families received courtesy busing if they were zoned to one school but assigned to another. Others got busing if they were zoned for a school, but opted to have their children attend Seth Boyden, the district’s only majority-Black elementary school. All families lived one to two miles from their assigned or chosen school.
The previous integration plans did not offer courtesy busing to all families, raising questions about equity, said Ronald Taylor, the district superintendent. The couple wants the district to offer ranked choice voting for school placements, instead of only using the algorithm. In nearby Rachel Fisher has two teenagers, but was involved in integration work in the district when her kids opted into Seth Boyden as elementary students. She said it is understandable people are upset they’ve lost transportation.
“But, I also don’t think that the initiative is a failure. And that’s what a lot of people are trying to spin this notion as,” she said.
