Many in the large crowd of Gary residents voiced skepticism and concern Tuesday over a proposal to shutter Bailly and Gary middle schools next year and route seventh and eighth graders to the West Side Leadership Academy, the district’s lone high school.
District manager Mike Raisor sought feedback on the proposed plan he said would save the district $4 million and help increase its budget surplus in the coming years. About 100 people attended the community forum, along with school board members. The state-controlled district has a $2.7 million operating surplus today, but the surplus shrinks once $46 million in federal coronavirus relief disappears along with a state common school loan deferral measure.
As Raisor gave an overview of different options considered by school officials, rumblings began in the audience and district attorney Shelice Tolbert asked the audience to be respectful. Attorney Tracy Coleman, who once served as an attorney for the district, continued to challenge Raisor’s solutions and others wanted to wait for a superintendent to be hired.
