Big changes could soon be on the way for fans hoping to watch the teams play.
That’s because, according to reports, Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, is planning to get out of the regional sprots network business. That means that the Pirates, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, too, may not have a television home. And, according to The Wall Street Journal, that could happen in a “matter of weeks.”
Per The Journal, a letter was sent to teams Friday saying “the business will not have sufficient cash to pay the upcoming rights fees.” That has not been entirely unexpected by both the NHL and MLB, and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said last week that the league would take over the broadcasting of its games if need be.
How, exactly, that would look is not entirely clear. But that will likely change, quickly, if Warner Bros. Discovery is indeed out on the deal. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
