A Pittsburg man who allegedly downloaded thousands of child pornography images and videos over 12 years was sentenced to more than nine years in federal prison.
OAKLAND — A Pittsburg man who allegedly collected thousands of child pornography images and videos over a 12-year period was sentenced this month to a little more than nine years in federal prison, court records show.
Steven Reed, 50, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography on June 21, the same day he was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White. The charges were related to an August 2020 search of Reed’s home where authorities allegedly found 7,481 images and 421 videos of child pornography on thumb drives and other electronic devices.
Police believe that Reed downloaded the material over a 12-year period, starting in 2008. When interviewed by authorities he said he believed it was a “victimless crime,” according to a prosecution sentencing memo. As part of the sentencing, White ordered Reed to pay a to-be-determined restitution amount to boys and girls who were depicted in the material Reed downloaded. Prosecutors have asked for a baseline of $90,000 to be distributed to 16 people.
