He began his career with a photo of President William McKinley when he was only 11 years old.

E.O. Goldbeck took this photo of President Gerald R. Ford at the Alamo on April 9, 1976. The photographer began his career with a photo of President William McKinley during a May 4, 1901, visit to San Antonio.Kind of surprisingly, in 31 years of writing this question-and-answer column about local history, no one has ever asked me about E.O.

As Jim Berg waits, famous photographer E.O. Goldbeck signs prints in 1982 in the garage studio located behind his Highland Park home on Drexel Avenue.Another reader, Jim Berg, also visited Goldbeck’s house to buy pictures and was impressed by its rock construction and the two-story garage that contained his large studio.“I will never forget how the tall and skinny Goldbeck took the outside stairwell, two at a time,” said Berg.

Although the photographer traveled frequently to shoot landscapes and world landmarks — Vlieger owns one of the czar’s palace in St. Petersburg, Russia — he was born in San Antonio and always came back to his hometown. Goldbeck began his professional career at 11 when he grabbed a picture of President William McKinley, who visited San Antonio on May 4, 1901, and sold it. After buying a camera of his own, he worked his way through Main Avenue High School taking photos of classmates and teachers and selling other photos to the San Antonio Express and San Antonio Light.
