One of the pilots of two Sea World helicopters that crashed at the Gold Coast, killing four people, might not have made a taxiing call before taking off, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau says.
The Sea World helicopters after one crashed to the ground and the other landed.Other passengers in the helicopters, including Tadros’ son, Nicholas, 10, were rushed to hospital. Nicholas was initially in a critical condition but survived after his lungs were flooded with aviation fuel.
Jenkinson, a highly commended pilot with more than 6200 hours of flying experience who had flown helicopters during bushfires and floods to help victims, was the chief pilot at Sea World Helicopters since 2019.The ATSB said the two helicopters had collided while Jenkinson was taking off, and another, piloted by his colleague Michael James, was about to land.
According to information provided to the ATSB, the pilots were supposed to make a taxi call just before lifting from the helipad, an airborne call while departing over an area known as “Sea World grass” to track north, and another inbound call past Porpoise Point to indicate they were turning to fly south.ATSB
Mitchell explained only some calls could be recorded at the Southport tower because it was behind many buildings and only picked up some calls at a certain altitude. The recordings showed Jenkinson had made an inbound call on his previous 10-minute flight about 1.38pm, indicating they were on the correct frequency at that time.
