The 8-month-old black bear cub, named Nixon, “is a tough little guy; despite his physical state, he’s eating well and is in good spirits,” a zoo veterinarian says.
According to the posts and videos on the, the Bear League has been tracking Nixon from his birth in “early February”; to the death of his mother; to the adoption, upbringing and eventual rejection by another mama bear; and to the moment he wandered into the shop.
Nixon’s treatment at the Oakland Zoo’s Veterinary Hospital so far has included a dental exam, a dermatology assessment, bloodwork sent to several labs, X-rays, an ultrasound and an hours-long medical exam the Zoo’s veterinary team performed Wednesday morning. They administered antibiotics, antifungals and special baths to treat his infected skin, as well as highlighting an infected bone in his foot and severe pneumonia as primary concerns.
He’s being kept warm by heat lamps at the veterinary hospital and eating a special diet of “bear chow” soaked in formula, or a nutrient-based kibble that helps bears grow to a healthy weight, as well as various produce, and browse.
