Phoenix has charted 22 days this year of temperatures reaching 110 degrees or higher, with several more forecasted. The city usually averages 21 days annually of temperatures at 110 degrees or higher. The lack of relief from warm temperatures overnight is hard on people’s bodies, which need a break from the heat in order to function properly, said Lara Cushing, PhD, an assistant professor of environmental health sciences at"From studying extreme heat events, we know that health effects are worse if heat persists overnight," Cushing said in an article about hot nights on the university’s website.
