Some early small ball and some long balls later let the Phillies take Game 5 of the NLCS and move a win from a return trip to the World Series.
The Phillies' Bryce Harper slugs a solo home run during the sixth inning of Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the Diamondbacks on Saturday in Phoenix. The trouble with watching two games slip away from your bullpen on two straight National League Championship Series days, in addition to the obvious, is what happens when someone needs to pitch late in a close game on the third.
Somehow he was, working through the heart of the order three times without allowing the Diamondbacks to score before surrendering a solo home run to Game 4 hero Alek Thomas in the seventh. That was the only run he allowed over seven innings in which he struck out eight. That would have been enough even if the Phillies’ offense had not come alive in the middle innings. But it did so anyway, lit by a familiar flame.
Since the series left Philadelphia, the Phillies had struggled to get the big hits. After scoring in the first inning of Games 1 and 2, they didn’t score early in Games 3 and 4. After going 7 for 17 with runners in scoring position in Games 1 and 2, they went 2 for 11 in Games 3 and 4. “From the start of the playoffs, sort of the message to everybody was ‘Let’s put pressure on people,’ ” Thomson said. “… them to maybe make some mistakes.”
