Voluntary giving to U.S. higher education institutions rose in 2021

Giving from alumni showed the largest increase , followed by a 9.1% increase in gifts from “other organizations,” which is comprised largely of donor-advised funds.

According to the CASE report, the most common restriction placed on endowment gifts is that they be used for student financial aid."Gifts to endowments are earmarked for scholarships more than any other purpose," said Senior Director of the CASE survey Ann E. Kaplan, noting that donors restricted 38.2% of such gifts for student financial aid.
