Unemployed doctors are even offering to work for free in state hospitals because they are so desperate to be employed and use their skills.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla did not keep his promise to employ young unemployed doctors in public hospitals by 1 April and now one of those doctors has decided that he and his wife will move to the UK next year to specialise and work there.
“I am pleased to announce today that we are working with my colleague, finance minister Enoch Godongwana. We have found a solution to the current difficulty of employing doctors who want to work in the public service.” His wife is completing her year of community service and he says they have now decided to get their qualifications in order to be able to work in the UK next year. They love South Africa and do not want to leave, but they have no choice, he says.
